Sage & Cedar
Nicole Jameson’s new Sage & Cedar location on Main Street in Kalispell has no shortage of familiar faces walking through the door. Nicole’s business has been a Whitefish staple since it opened in the early 1990s, but the bath and body product store has always attracted customers from across the valley and beyond.
“People kept asking us, ‘I wish you were closer,’ Nicole said. “So when we saw the building in downtown Kalispell, it all fell in line.”
The new building is bigger than Sage & Cedar’s original downtown Whitefish location—all the better to provide Kalispell residents with all the custom fragrancing they could possibly want.
Inspired by a custom fragrancing store that Nicole loved while a student at the University of Montana, she decided to start one of her own when her first son was born in 1994. It outgrew its first basement location and hasn’t stopped expanding since.
Sage & Cedar’s custom fragrancing is a do-it-yourself operation that allows customers to create single note or blended concoctions. Almond, huckleberry, and violet are among the almost 100 fragrances available for mixing, and Nicole offers over 40 different products for fragrancing, including 12 lotions, shave gel, a body soak, massage oil, and a body scrub. There are five different sizes available for bottling, ranging from small vials to larger shampoo and conditioner containers.
For customers looking for something premade, Nicole stocks the shelves with Sage & Cedar Favorites, products that are made in-house with the same bases, essential oils, and other scents that custom fragrances customers create with. One of the most popular fragrances is Montana Morning, a soft fir and cedar blend with a gentle floral touch. Another is Montana Evening, a bug-repellant mix made with lemongrass, citronella, and lavender. Nicole has a particularly hard time keeping lemongrass sage products on the shelf—it’s one of the community’s favorites. Sage & Cedar also sells a host of other products, many made right here in Montana. There’s comfy loungewear and pajamas, aromatherapy for your car, felted soap, beard oil, and more.
Nicole looks forward to Sage & Cedar’s future in Kalispell. She plans to use the building’s extra space to offer products beyond the line she sells in Whitefish. And, she says she’s especially excited to grow alongside Kalispell.
“I’m a big fan of downtowns,” she said. “You lose the spirit when big box stores come in. When we moved here, I felt a good vibe from the other small businesses. Kalispell feels replenished.”
